Paul Coverdale, VE3ICV, RAC Special Advisor, is once again in Geneva, Switzerland attending the latest Preparatory Meetings for the 2023 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-23) which will take place between November 20 and December 15, 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
In the lead-up to each WRC, detailed technical work is carried out in ITU-R Working Parties. These Preparatory Meetings are usually held at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) headquarters in Geneva and are of two weeks’ duration. Paul is part of the Canadian delegation to a specific Working Party (WP5A) which includes Amateur Radio in its scope.
What issues are Amateurs following here? An important Agenda Item (AI 9.1b) concerns co-existence between the Amateur Service and the Radio Navigation Satellite Service (GPS, Galileo, Glonass and others) in the band 1240-1300 MHz (23 cm amateur band). Paul will be working closely with delegates from IARU and will introduce a contribution supporting Canadian Amateur interests in this topic.
