Radio operators swap stories, gear at Midwest Hamfest (Illinois)

Ham radio operators from across the Midwest did something in Collinsville on Saturday that they don’t often have the opportunity to do — talk face to face.

The St. Louis & Suburban Radio Club’s Winterfest, the Midwest’s largest Hamfest (as in ham radio), combined 180 vendors and thousands of attendees inside Collinsville’s Gateway Convention Center to swap stories and gear during the day-long event.

“My favorite thing is communicating with people,” said David Duncan of Wood River, a ham radio operator for more than 30 years. “Compared to using a cellphone it’s a little more challenging, it’s more random because you never know who is going to be on the other end.”

Duncan was enjoying himself on Saturday because he finally got to meet some radio operators in person with whom he had been communicating.
