In February, the Upshur County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management started an amateur ham radio club. In a short amount of time, the club has seen great success.
Emergency Management Director Steve Wykoff said the club’s first meeting had more people on hand than expected.
“At that initial meeting, we had roughly 50 people in attendance,” he said. “We’re still averaging between 30 and 40 people at each meeting. We learned that there was more interest than we initially thought in amateur radio. That is definitely a good thing.”
