A ham radio pileup is when one station is calling CQ and many stations are answering them. This makes it difficult for the calling station to pick individual stations out to work. Several techniques are used to improve the working conditions.
A pileup usually happens when a station is a rare DX station or during an expedition, special event, or contest. This makes them a highly desired contact, causing the other operators to keep trying to work this station.
