Years after disaster inspired amateur radio interest, residents remain dedicated (US Virgin Islands)

Six years ago, when hurricanes Irma and Maria wiped out communications across the territory, there was just one lifeline to connect VITEMA with St. John Rescue, the Red Cross, and other support organizations — ham radio.

The importance of this service during the territory’s biggest modern-day disaster spiked an interest in residents, and the amateur radio community grew notably in the year following the hurricanes. Interest remains strong on St. John, where the St. John Amateur Radio Club holds regular monthly meetings. Fifty-six people have earned their technician class license, considered an entry-level designation, and there are about 20 active ham radio operators on St. John.
