Police have found human remains after hours of sifting through dirt in a painstaking search for missing campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay in remote bushland near Dargo, in Victoria’s east.
The discovery was announced just after 3pm on Tuesday. The remains are yet to be formally identified – a process police say could take some time.
Leaving the remote scene shortly before 6.30pm on Tuesday, the search team remained tight-lipped about the day’s result.
Inspector Andrew Stamper from the missing persons squad said “there is still a long way to go”.
Mr Hill and Ms Clay vanished while camping in the remote Wonnangatta Valley in March 2020. Their burnt-out campsite was found days later.
Specialist police were called in to scour an area of the Grant Historic Area in East Gippsland, 23 kilometres north of the Dargo township, on Monday.
