Ford now has a patent that would bring the <a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US20240289844A1\/en?oq=20240289844\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ads we hate<\/a> to your vehicle\u2019s infotainment system. [via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/ford-patents-in-car-advertising-system-that-listens-to-passenger-conversations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PCMag<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Ford has already replied to criticism with the usual corporate spiel of patents not necessarily being the direction the company will go with future products, but it\u2019s hard to imagine that other automakers aren\u2019t planning similar systems since <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2021\/12\/30\/new-cars-will-nickle-and-dime-you-its-automotive-as-a-service\/\">they\u2019re already charging extra<\/a> for heated seats, EV range, and performance. Bringing ads to the captive audience of your personal vehicle and targeting them based on listening to the occupants\u2019 conversations would be a new low. Maybe you\u2019ll be able to pay an extra $100\/month for the \u201cad-free experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of taking advantage of the EV transition to make <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2020\/05\/15\/electric-vehicles-continue-the-same-wasteful-mistakes-that-limit-longevity\/\">better, simpler cars<\/a>, automakers are using their highly-computerized nature to extract more from you and provide less when you drive off the lot. <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2023\/10\/25\/2023-hackaday-supercon-cory-doctorow-signs-on-as-keynote-speaker\/\">Enshittification<\/a> has come for the automobile. Perhaps auto executives should read <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2024\/01\/03\/a-few-reasonable-rules-for-the-responsible-use-of-new-technology\/\">A Few Reasonable Rules for the Responsible Use of New Technology<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>The first step of blocking these ads will likely be <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2023\/08\/05\/jailbreaking-tesla-infotainment-systems\/\">jailbraking the infotainment system<\/a>.
