In a gesture of community support, the Smoky Mountain Amateur Radio Club (W4OLB), based in Maryville Tennessee near Knoxville, has announced a reduction in its annual dues. Starting in 2025, dues will decrease from $30 to $20, aiming to ease financial strain for both current and prospective members.
Club President Andrew Lawson (N2AL) highlighted the importance of keeping amateur radio accessible: “We know times are tough, and we want to help maintain this community that has connected and educated so many.” Founded in 1947, the Smoky Mountain Amateur Radio Club has long been a central part of the East Tennessee radio scene, promoting emergency communication skills, hosting educational events, and welcoming operators of all ages and skill levels.
The club’s commitment to outreach includes monthly meetings, training sessions, and a daily net broadcast on DMR Brandmeister Talk Group 314742, with the support of President Emeritus Bob Wilson (KK4XA). The reduced dues reflect the club’s mission to make ham radio an affordable and inclusive hobby.
