The largest Ham radio convention in the world returns to Greene County this weekend.
Hamvention runs three days from Friday through Sunday at the Greene County Fairgrounds and Expo Center, in Xenia. Doors open each day at 9 a.m. They close at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. Friday, convention chairman Jim Storms said.
According to the National Association for Amateur Radio, people can use “ham radio” to talk across town or across the world without the Internet or cell phones. The service can be a lifeline during emergencies. The NAAR says operators have at least a basic knowledge of radio technology and operating principles, and pass an examination for the FCC license to operate on radio frequencies known as the “Amateur Bands.”
