The Monkees’ Micky Dolenz, A Physics Connoisseur? Who Knew?

As part of my reporting for a story last week about the new NJR Media Group podcast, “MOVIES WITH…,” I interviewed Micky Dolenz, last surviving member of the 1960s classic rock band, The Monkees. He had been a guest on the first episode of the podcast in March.

Along the way, I asked Dolenz, 79, to tell me something that nobody knows about him. His first response was that his 69 years in show business had been well documented, from “Circus Boy” as a child actor, through acting and singing (and playing drums) in The Monkees television show and rock group, to directing and producing films, do there was much else to learn. In fact, Dolenz still tours, having recently played a sold-out show in Peekskill, NY.

But then Dolenz reconsidered my question, and the topic of science came up. Who knew a former Monkee was interested in quantum physics, ham radio, nuclear fusion and Einstein’s Theory Of Relativity? So we discussed the topic for a few minutes. Following are edited excerpts from that insightful part of our phone conversation.
