Colton Corner: Ham radio makes perfect senior project (Oregon)

For her senior project, Colton High School student Evelyn Brinkley introduced more people to the world of amateur (ham) radio and the benefits of having the radio wave communication if and when the Internet and phone systems crash.

“I am really into ham radio and have been for most of my life,” Brinkley said. “I thought this would be a good way to share the interest and knowledge with others.”

In order to do this, Brinkley offered a free two-day class to help people earn their ham radio license. The classes were held at Colton Fire Station Nov. 3-4, with the license test following the final class.

The classes were led by ham radio instructor Ken Tolliver, from Tualatin. There was no fee for the classes or test, but once the test was passed there was a $35 for the FCC license.
