Bristol radio operator among the first in the world to learn of JFK’s assassination 60 years ago (UK)

The fascination over the assassination of US President JFK still remains, decades after he was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas. But in the week of the 60th anniversary of the death, we can reveal an amateur radio operator in Bristol was one of the first in the world to hear the news.

Roy Emery, now 93, was working as a radio operator in Bristol on November 22, 1963, when he picked up the news via Morse code. He received a signal from a Canadian station that was trying to connect with ‘any station in Europe’ using Morse code.

Roy’s son Jim says what happened would be unheard of in today’s world. “With the fast communications and 24-hour news broadcasts that we have now, I doubt that it could happen again,” he said.
