Pilot in Emiliano Sala Crash Was Avid Ham Radio Operator

Emiliano Sala, an Argentinian footballer, made headlines in the sports world recently when his plane disappeared over the English Channel en route to Cardiff City where he’d just signed a contract to play with the English Premier League team.

Just over two weeks after the plane disappeared, the wreckage was found and Sala’s body was recovered.

The pilot was David Ibbotson, an English ham radio operator [G0BCK according to QRZ.com]. His body has not been found and search efforts were abandoned due to inclement weather.

The Piper Malibu aircraft remains underwater off the coast of Guernsey in the English Channel.

The cause for the crash is still ongoing.

It is believed Mr Ibbotson, 60, an enthusiastic private pilot with more than 30-years flying experience who ran his own gas engineering and plumbing business, may have been thrown clear of the aircraft when it descended into the sea just over an hour into a flight from Nantes to Cardiff, with Sala as the sole passenger.

A private fundraising campaign has been started to continue the search for Ibbotson’s body.
